Art Project With
Tamara Bond

Tamara
graduated from Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design with a degree
in Visual Arts in 2001. Her drawings and books have been shown in BC,
Ontario, and Saskatchewan. Her series of drawings The Love Project was
made into a chapter book through Jack Pine Press in Saskatoon, of which
she is a collective member.
She
is interested in creating a place in my drawings where reality and
imagination merge. Imagination has been defined as “the ability to
confront and deal with reality by using the creative power of the
mind”. Drawing upon memory, family history, stories, and
dreams, to create a new narrative enables her to re-enact events, and
to understand and process life. In the drawings personal issues are
addressed by attaching physical and visual metaphors to them.
Re-occurring elements such as water, animals, food and the forest are
all introduced as symbols into the narrative in an effort to re-tell or
elaborate on my past. The main character, a self-portrait of sorts, is
a rather expressionless girl, decorated and clothed in transparent
dresses. Her body changes shape to negotiate the situations she has
been drawn her into. Her companions are a collection of
actual ceramic and plastic figurines in my studio- rabbits, birds, a
chipmunk, a dog with its decapitated head, a pair of lovebirds, and a
horse with a missing leg. Unlike the girl, each character is very
expressive in it’s own way and is chosen to reflect a certain mood or
tell part of the story.
