New
Student Poster Series with Lesson Plans
Building yOUR Future through
Engineering and Geoscience
The Association of
Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS) has
introduced a new series of posters – designed by students for students
– to encourage positive attitudes towards careers in math, science,
engineering and geosciences.
The theme is
Building yOUR Future through Engineering and Geoscience. There are 10
posters in the English series: one each for grades 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and
11, and three for grade 10. The French series includes four posters:
one each for grades 1, 6, 7 and 10.
“The goal of the
posters is to have K-12 students visualize careers in math, science,
engineering and geosciences as ‘cool’, interesting and fun, as well as
a way to make a positive contribution to their community and society in
general,” says Kevin Hudson, P.Eng, chair of the APEGS K-12
sub-committee in charge of the poster project.
The APEGS K-12
Committee initiated, coordinated and sponsored the project. It provided
resources and guidelines to students, made the selection from all
posters developed, approved final layouts and covered printing and
distribution costs. Grade 8 students from Georges Vanier School, a
designated Fine Arts School in Saskatoon, designed the posters using
the school’s computer resources.
Posters Include
Lesson Plans Relevant to Curriculum
The inclusion of
lessons plans on the back of each poster is an innovative aspect of the
poster series. APEGS recruited teachers from the Greater Saskatoon
Catholic Schools and Saskatoon Public Schools to develop the lesson
plans. APEGS worked in consultation with the Saskatchewan Ministry of
Education to ensure lesson plans are relevant to the appropriate
curriculum for each grade.
“Posters for the
lower grade levels will present general concepts designed to interest
students in math, science, engineering and geosciences,” says Kevin
Hudson, P.Eng. “The level of sophistication will increase for the
higher grade levels, with posters for Grades 10-11 increasingly
focussed on specific disciplines of engineering and geosciences.”
The posters are
being distributed free of charge to all elementary and high schools
around the province, in conjunction with Engineering & Geoscience
Week in Saskatchewan, March 1-7, 2009.
