PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Bishop Roborecki School is a busy place, with lots of activities designed to engage our students. I would like to Thank our staff for their contributions, especially the coaches of Cross-Country and Co-Ed Soccer. Please join me in thanking: Ms Smith, Mrs. Manning and Ms Bryden for their leadership in preparing our Cross Country participants. Considering the weather this fall, from plus 30 to snow fall, they did great job of helping our students be successful. We run a co-ed Soccer team for the grade 8’s. Mr. Weiman and Mrs. Olfert do a fantastic job of organizing the players, officiating the games and managing the schedule for the other schools. Thank you very much. I would also like to recognize all of the students who participate. You are terrific ambassadors for yourselves and our school. Well done everyone. We are beginning our volleyball season. I will provide details about the teams in the next newsletter.
….Progress Reports Progress Reports, (report cards), will be distributed on Friday, November 20. We would encourage you to review the report with your child. Research suggests that the time parents take to review the positive parts of the report and offer support to the child as they plan to make improvements in the weaker areas helps children to become more successful. Assessment Conferences, ( Three-Way Conferences), are scheduled for Thursday, November 26 – after school, and Friday, November 27 – all day. Please Note: There are no classes scheduled for students on Friday, the 27th. I encourage you to contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Talbot, our Office Coordinator, to book a conference time. Please take the opportunity to stop by the office when you come to the school for your Assessment Conference and introduce yourself. I look forward to meeting our student’s parents and guardians.
….School’s Win Twice Raffle I would like to Thank everyone for their outstanding support for the School’s Win Twice Raffle ticket sales campaign. We are very appreciative of the efforts of everyone who supported this activity. Our students, families and staff all contributed to make this event run smoothly. I would like you to know that Ms Dutka did a fantastic job of coordinating the distribution and collection of the tickets. She helped to take care of the official responsibilities that are necessary for this fundraiser for the Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation. And, we should also thank the parents of our Catholic School Community Council for their leadership and support for this event. They are a great part of our team, and, it is fantastic to have a strong team here at Roborecki. If there are tickets still at your home would you please try and return them to the school in the next day or so.
….Reminders - PARKING….Please respect the “designated parking” areas in front of the school. These are City of Saskatoon restrictions. I have noticed Parking Enforcement Personnel driving around our School zone. I know that they do ticket vehicles parked inappropriately. I hope that no one from our School community has to deal with this issue. Thanks to those who are able to take the time to respect the School Bus loading zone and the Disabled Parking loading zone. I know the drivers of those buses appreciate your cooperation. - WINTER CLOTHING….We would ask that you label or mark your children’s winter clothing, especially mitts and boots. The weather is changing and more clothing needs to be worn by our students. It seems that the more clothing items there are worn, the more likely they are left behind. Clothing items that marked with your child’s name are easier to return to the child. PANDEMIC PREPAREDNESS – H1N1 FLU VIRUS We have prepared a summary of the PANDEMIC H1N1 INFLUENZA IMMUNIZATION process. I would ask that you note the following: …WHAT IS A PANDEMIC? A pandemic is a worldwide outbreak of a communicable disease that affects a large proportion of the population. …WHAT IS INFLUENZA? Influenza is a virus that affects the lungs and airways. Signs and symptoms generally include sudden onset of fever, cough, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. The disease commonly occurs in clusters and can spread rapidly. A common complication from influenza is pneumonia. …WHAT IS PANDEMIC INFLUENZA? Pandemic influenza occurs when a new influenza virus, with an ability to spread easily from human to human circulates worldwide. Because most people will have no immunity to the pandemic influenza virus, infection, and illness rates are expected to be higher than other seasonal influenza rates. …PREVENTING THE FLU. Vaccination is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of influenza. Immunity begins 7 – 10 days after immunization. …WHAT IS IMMUNITY? Immunity is the ability of the body to defend itself against attack by an infectious agent. …VACCINES AND IMMUNITY. Vaccines contain weakened or killed versions of virus or bacteria. Influenza vaccine causes your body to produce antibodies against the influenza virus. It builds up your own natural immunity without subjecting you to the disease or its complications. …ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WILL BE HOSTING IMMUNIZATION CLINICS. Bishop Roborecki School will be a site for immunizing our students. It appears now, that only our students will be given the opportunity to be immunized here at school. …SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITIES. - Immunization packages will be distributed to students about 2 weeks before the school clinic. We anticipate the clinic to be schedule about mid-November. Each informational package will include CONSENT FORMS that are to be returned to the school before the Immunization Clinic. Only students returning CONSENT FORMS will be immunized at school. There is no Immunization Clinic booked for students who are absent that day. The CONSENT FORM will be posted on www.4flu.ca if the paper copy does not reach you. - Recruit and schedule parent helpers. The Saskatoon Health Region is requesting that we have 8 – 10 parents on hand that day to help organize and support the students who will be immunized. If you are interested in helping please contact Mrs. Turcotte, our Home School Liaison Worker. To do so, call the school at 659-7188. - Roles for Elementary School Parent Helpers. – RUNNERS…alert classroom teacher when it is their turn to be immunized. – TRAFFIC FLOW…directs students into holding area for next available immunizing nurse after Consent Form has been reviewed by SHR Staff. – STAFF ROOM ATTENDANT…organizes refreshments for immunization team and volunteers. – IMMUNIZATION SUPPORT…is able to assist the immunizing nurse to distract or comfort children who are anxious. - PLEASE NOTE: IF A STUDENT IS FEELING UNWELL, THE NURSE WILL ATTEND TO THE CHILD. IF YOU’RE CONTACT INFORMATION IS DIFFERENT THAT DAY, PROVIDE YOUR CHILD WITH CONTACT INFORMATION. - (Source: Saskatoon Health Region Resource Guide, Occupational Health and Safety: Best Practice Guideline) NEW ALERGIES – possibly leading to – NUT ALERT… We are sending home a Student Health Update form. We have some information that there are a number of our children in our community that have sensitivities or allergies to nuts or nut product. If your child is severely affected by nuts, please give your child’s teacher a note to follow up the Health Form, explaining the issue. If there are other complications related to peanuts, etc for your family, please contact Mr. Hunks. Like other schools, we may have to respond to the health and safety of our students by creating a Nut Alert status. If that is the case we will inform you through the school newsletter.
FRONT DOOR REMINDERS… If children arrive at school before 8:30 they are asked to remain in the Mudroom on the West-Side of the school. Those doors are open by 7:45 in the morning. At 8:30, students are invited in to the school and are expected to be in their classroom and following the teacher’s expectations. We restrict the use of the Front Doors of the school to our Pre-k and Special Needs students and those children accompanied by a guardian. We do this to keep our little ones safe from all the traffic that could potentially use the front doors. It is a small area and does not allow small children to wait safely for their transportation and facilitate the number of people accessing the Front Office at dismissal times. We have reminded students of our expectations. If there are extraordinary circumstances for students and families that this practice challenges, you are asked to contact Mr. Hunks. We would ask that you respect the Parking Restrictions that are near the front entrance of the school. We ask that you do not park in the area that our School Bus loads students from. We appreciate that the availability of parking around the school is quite limited but we would hope that you would help us try to keep our students safe. Thank you.
…PHONE BOOK RECYCLING We are invited to participate in the 2009 Phone Book Recycling Program. If we do SaskTel will refund 10 cents for each phone book that is recycled on the school’s behalf. Any profits generated from this activity will go to supporting the number of student activities that we plan for. To participate, follow these steps: - Students are asked to recycle their phone books at home by putting them into the local paper recycling facilities – the blue bins at the corner of 22nd and the Gas Station. - Call the school or send a note with the total number of books recycled from home. - Families may bring their phone books to School on Friday, October 23. We will transport the books to the recycling depot on your behalf on that day only. We will then include these books in our School total. - If you are part of a business or organization that has books to recycle – you can drop them off at school on the 23rd or you can transport them to a recycling depot and report that total to the school. - We will report our School total in mid-November. I would ask that you try and report the number of books recycled by the second week of November or by Friday, Nov. 13. Community School Coordinator Update The past 2 weeks have been busy! The entire school participated in The Big Crunch on October 15th. All students bit into locally grown carrots at 10:25 am for the BIG CRUNCH. The event was to promote locally grown produce and eating healthy. We were part of over 4000 students in Saskatoon who participated in this event. Every Friday this month we have been encouraging students to be active to promote in-motion. Students who are physically active increase their learning abilities at school. We have gone on lunch hour walks around the park on October 2nd, 8th and 16th. On Friday, October 16th we announced our big winners who participated this month for in-motion. Need new shoes? Does your child need new shoes? St. Mary’s Community School (337 Ave O South) is hosting a shoe clinic on Saturday October 24th from 9am-3pm. Our community board outside the Kindergarten room is always being updated. Please come check it out to find out about programs and services in our community.

Voting in the Catholic School Board Election on Wednesday, October 28: Question: Can I vote for the Catholic school board if I am Ukrainian Catholic? Answer: Yes. If the separate school division was established for people of the Roman Catholic faith, then you must be of the Roman Catholic faith. However, if the Pope in Rome is recognized as the leader of your church, for example, Ukrainian Catholic, you are considered a member of the minority Catholic faith thereby becoming an “elector” for the Roman Catholic separate school board. Question: Can I vote for the Catholic school board if I am not Catholic? Answer: You are not qualified to vote for the Catholic school board if you are not Catholic. Where your children attend school does not affect your eligibility to vote, according to provincial law.
