PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

PANDEMIC INFLUENZA UPDATE

…We hosted an Influenza Immunization Clinic last week.  I would like to Thank all of those involved for their cooperation and patience.  I would like to acknowledge the staff of Bishop Roborecki School for their assistance and leadership in making the clinic very efficient.  I would especially like to Thank Mrs. Turcotte and Ms. Dutka for all of their efforts in coordinating the planning and setting up for the clinic.  As well, I would like you to know how efficient and resourceful Mrs. Talbot has been in providing the memos and communication necessary to keep you informed about the details of immunization.  I would also like to thank the volunteers who were able to assist with the Flu Immunization Clinic. A big Thank-you to these parents were able to take time from their busy schedules to help comfort and support our children: A. Dela Pena, R. Fedorchuk, J. Ledoux, and J. Brown.

…Public Health will be at our school tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 10:30 till 12:00, to immunize students in grades 7 and 8.  Students without parental consent will not be immunized. Also – The Team at our clinic will only be able to immunize students in pre-k to grade 6 that were missed in our first session if ALL of the following conditions are met:  - VACCINE IS AVAILABLE  –  TIME IS AVAILABLE  - SIGNED CONSENT FORMS ARE COMPLETED.  If you have questions, please contact the school.

…7 HABITS FOR HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL CHILDREN

We have focused on the First Habit:  Be Proactive for the last two weeks.  For the next two weeks we will be highlighting the Second Habit:  BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND.  Summarizing this Habit, we will share the following with our students:  I PLAN AHEAD AND SET GOALS and I DO THINGS THAT HAVE MEANING AND MAKE A DIFERENCE.  Please support our efforts.  To do so helps our children build these Habits for themselves.  Using this language and these ideas at home will give our students more practice and help to develop these skills in a shorter time.

…Progress Reports

We are sending home Progress Reports or Report Cards this Friday.  Please take the time to review them with your child.  While there is lots of information in there to review with your child, we suggest that identifying all the positives and the strengths helps to have a productive conversation about “planning ahead and setting goals”.  If you have not done so, please contact the school and speak to Mrs. Talbot or your child’s teacher about booking an Assessment Conference.  We are booking Conferences for Thursday, Nov. 26 (after school) and Friday, Nov. 27 (all day).  Reminder:  THERE ARE NO CLASSES FOR STUDENTS ON FRIDAY, BUT STUDENTS ARE INCLUDED IN THE ASSESSMENT CONFERENCE.

…ANTI- BULLYING ACTIVITIES

This week we are highlighting Bully Awareness.  It is the responsibility of each school to review the Policy of our Division.  This is a brief summary of our beliefs. I invite you to review the Policy on our School Division’s web site.  If you would like your own copy please contact us and we can provide one for you.  The Policy will be on our school’s web page in the next week.

Bully awareness week…

This week, we would like to focus our thoughts on Anti-Bullying Behavior.  This is a brief description of bullying.

What is it?

Bullying is defined as a conscious, willful, deliberate and repeated hostile activity marked by an imbalance of power, intent to harm, and/or a threat of aggression.  When bullying goes from  bad to worse, it may lead to a feeling of hopelessness on the part of the individual being bullied.

If you think about it, most people may have been a target of bullying at some point in their lives.  They may have also been the person who was doing the bullying or, most certainly, seen someone being bullied.  It’s hurtful and harmful and is NOT a normal part of growing up.

Bullying can take different forms, including:

VERBAL; taunts, name-calling and put-downs, intimidation, threats, SOCIAL; exclusion from peer groups, ganging-up, ridiculing, PHYSICAL; pushing and shoving someone purposely, repeatedly challenging another student to a fight, CYBER; using the computer or other technology to harass or threaten another student.

Bullies may not think much of it, but giving someone a nickname or teasing them is abuse, even if it’s followed by “I was only kidding” or “can’t you take a joke?”

This week, our teachers will be teaching specific lessons about “bullying”.  Our goal is to inform the students about the behavior, identify its harm and remove it from our day.   We will also be highlighting the virtue of RESPECT this week.  We define RESPECT with these images:  Being respectful is an attitude of honoring people and caring about their rights.  Being respectful is reflected with which we treat one another, the way we speak and the way we treat other people’s belongings.  Let’s have a great time being respectful.

On Friday, we encourage everyone to wear the color blue.  This reinforces our “blue ribbon activity”.  Each individual in our school will receive 2 Blue Ribbons.  The intent is to “give these ribbons away”.  They are to be given away to someone who “has made a difference” in their day.  We did this last year, and we felt it had a positive impact in our school community.  This positive recognition for each of our students helps to focus on the “positives” in our community.

Spirit Day

Friday, November 20th will be Wacky Hair Day!  Show your school spirit and come to school with a silly hair style!

Message from CSCC

Thank you to everyone for their outstanding support of our fall fundraiser, Winter Wonderland. Response was tremendous and allowed us to make our goal for this fundraiser. Congratulations to our highest selling student, Emily K. in Pre-K who will receive a $25.00 cash incentive. Good job! Our Pre-K AM class was the highest selling class and will receive a special class treat as well. Congratulations to all!

Be sure to mark Thurs. Dec. 3rd on your calendars - the first annual CSCC Family Craft Night will take place that evening at the school. There will be pizza pre-orders out soon, and every child in attendance will have the opportunity to do one bookmark craft for free! All other crafts including pins, bracelets, ornaments and much more will only cost $1 each! A wonderful, inexpensive night out for your family while supporting the students of our school. See you then!

Lastly, Dec. 8th - 10th will be the dates for this year's Santa Shop. More information on this will be out soon, but the students have already been working hard at earning their Santa Dollars. So start putting your gift lists together because the shopping opportunities will be great!
