Introduction

The student handbook is designed to be a source of information about our school.  In the past, an insert was included in the agenda sharing this information.  However, for cost saving purposes, we are now using this handbook format instead.  We hope that it will be able to answer any questions that you may have about the school, but please feel free to call the school in regards to any inquiries you may have.

Behavioural Expectations

École Sister O'Brien School is for learning and appropriate behavior is expected.  We, at École Sister O'Brien, encourage all students to:
  • attend school regularly and conform to the rules of the school
  • participate willingly in their learning
  • respect others' safety, well being, and property
  • be accountable for their behavior and responsive to reasonable, related and respectful consequences
  • participate in creating a safe, positive environment conducive to learning

We believe that every child has the right to feel safe at school.  Physical abuse (hitting, punching, kicking, etc.), verbal abuse (name calling, swearing) and bullying will not be tolerated.

Consequences for inappropriate behavior will be progressive, ascending from lenient to severe: quiet verbal reprimand, denial of privileges, school service, removal from class, detention, alternative out of class programming and suspension.  Parents will be notified by a phone call or letter in regards to more serious situations.

Study Habits

Success comes with CONSISTENCY:
  • doing the best you possibly can do on every assignment
  • completing all assignments conscientiously with special regard for organization, neatness and legibility
  • handing in assignments on the due dates

Success comes with RESPONSIBILITY:

  • if you are absent, it is up to you to ask for the missed assignments from the teacher or a peer
  • list your daily assignments in your agenda

Success comes through STUDYING:

  • review your written notes on a daily basis
  • prepare for your exams by organizing your study periods well in advance
  • cramming the night before does not produce the best results

Religion

Each classroom will have the equivalent of one-half hour per day of formal teaching of religion. However, it is hoped that a Christian atmosphere will permeate throughout the school day by words and deeds.

There will be formal occasions when we celebrate the Eucharist together.  As well, there will be formal celebrations which will be related to the character of the religion program.

We will continue to assist the parents in sacramental preparation:  First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation.

École Sister O'Brien School belongs to St. Anne's Parish.  Father Paul Donlevy and Father Ralph Kleiter, our Parish Priests, work closely with the teachers and will visit our classrooms whenever mutual arrangements are made.  They may be reached at 931-4700.

Religion is a vital part of a student's overall education, but the school does not assume full responsibility for seeing that children fulfill all their religious obligations.  Our efforts are short changed if the home is not prepared to undertake a large part of this responsibility.

School Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary if the student hopes to get the best results in his/her school work.  If a student is absent from school, the parents should notify the school at 659-7480 or send a note indicating the reason for absence.  Students are to report to the office if they are arriving late.
