Bullying

Bullying is a topic that is in the news and on the lips of many. Our classroom is not immune to the effects of bullying. We have chosen to explore what causes people to act like bullies, and their common characteristics. After coming to an understanding of what is a bully the students asked the question, what can be done to stop bullying?

There are many web sites and books written about bullying but the students wanted to know which ones really work and which didn’t. A group of students explored this area. Another group of students wanted to know what works in other places and used epals to connect with students in other schools in various parts of the world. Their views of bullying and its effects on students allowed the group to come to its understanding of what strategies for them work to end bullying.

A fourth group explored various pictures of bullying. A number of representations were explored and the group ranked the pictures according which best depicted bullying. Their findings are included.

The class has learned a great deal about bullying and its effects on many people. They are trying their best to use the knowledge gained to become better role models and advocates for a bully-free school. The students have the full support of the school administration to try to make this a reality.
