Symbols of Peace

Our Grade 4 class  researched different Peace Symbols to understand where they came from and how their symbolic meaning came to be.  The students were divided into four groups, with each group responsible for one of the Peace Symbols.  The four symbols are the Peace Sign , the Peace Pipe, the Dove, and the Poppy.

The students identified these symbols after having a lengthy discussion of what they consider to be a Peace Symbol.  Each group provided a written explanation of their Peace Symbol, origins, and their feeling on whether they think it is a good symbol to use and justify their views.  The groups will also be providing a visual representation of their symbol created by their group.

Along with the visual representation the students provided clip-art pictures of their symbols to enhance their overall presentation.  They  researched clip-art on the Internet, as well as pertinent information for their project symbol.

At the conclusion of their research the groups  presented what they have learned to the rest of the class.  Students  became familiar with using the Internet to do research,  use word processing programs and copy and paste clip-art.
