COMMUNITY COORDINATOR – WHAT IS MY ROLE?
As Community Coordinator, I am a link for parents and community members to the school, as well as an advocate. I ensure their voice is heard in the school setting or provide a forum for them to share their ideas. I am the researcher for the implementation of their ideas and a resource to services. I am the community resource for program information and referrals to other agencies (which can include employment, health, or other services), and I also create programming for at-risk students, seek and develop community partnerships, and organize and implement school community events.
My office is located in room 22 at the school, and is always open to students, parents and the community. This is my 3rd year at St. John School, and I feel very blessed to be part of such a wonderful community.
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
Care & Share Mentorship Program
We feel it is important to involve the business community in Saskatoon community schools, and most importantly, have them assisted in meeting the needs of Saskatoon’ children. Our Mentorship Program does exactly that. Through subsequent meetings, we allow the company to assist with the needs of the school’s kids and give the schools a chance to assess how the company’s resources can be best utilized for the students. St. John School is partnered with the following businesses:
Humboldt Electric Ltd.
Industrial Welding Ltd.
Mentor companies sponsor events, they help at track and field meets, play days, carnivals, and host barbeques. This involvement puts a whole community in a school yard to cheer the kids on and become part of the activities. Many of the mentor companies get involved with the school to provide necessities for their students. Other mentor companies help the schools reach larger goals. They provide materials, labor, or capital funds to set up outdoor lights for the playground to make it a safe place at night or provide computers and programs or school supplies. Some work to build outdoor hockey rinks or basketball courts. Some mentors provide volunteers to attend the school and read with the younger kids and some build clothing and shoe racks at the school. We are very thankful for all the contributions made by the mentor companies.
Partnerships in Education
Abbey Field Seniors Home is situated in Holiday Park just a few blocks from St. John School. Our kindergarten classes enjoy visiting the seniors, singing songs, reading stories, and making crafts. Our middle years classes grow gardens at Abbey Field, these Garden Projects teaches students both theoretical and practical skills regarding horticulture, nutritious foods, environmental respect, and community development. This project gives students the opportunity to see the growth process from beginning to end, it develops relationships between children and seniors, and most importantly, it gives seniors an opportunity to share their knowledge and experience in a community-oriented manner.
Art For Life Partnership
We are also excited to announce that our school will be taking part in a three-year partnership called ART for LIFE with the Mendel Art Gallery. This program strives to make art accessible to the community and integrate art into all school curricula. We will have an art resident on site every week, so we hope to beautify our school environment with the artistic talents of our students throughout this partnership.
CHEP PROGRAM
A breakfast and lunch program is based at our school. It is designed to provide a service for students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to have breakfast and lunch provided in the home. It is intended to be used on an “as needed basis”.
Melva Degagne is the Nutrition Coordinator for our CHEP program. She has a passion for children and cooking, and we feel so lucky to have her as a part of our school community.
