A world of opportunities
In addition to benefiting from a wider range of career opportunities, students who study French perform better in their first language while learning Canada’s other official language. They also learn other languages more easily, have access to more sources of information and develop a better appreciation of their own culture and other cultures.
Core French and Intensive Core French
Core French provides a solid base for students to build language skills by focusing on learning to use the language in real life situations. It is offered at a number of schools within the Catholic school division.
Intensive French is offered to students in Grade 6 at certain schools for students citywide. French is taught for approximately 65% of the school day during a five-month period. Transportation for students is the responsibility of the parents.
French Immersion
French Immersion develops academic and language skills that enable students to become functionally bilingual. As students progress in the program, they perform as well as or better than those in a regular English program.

There are two types of French Immersion elementary programs:
| Type B | Type A |
| Kindergarten | 100% | 100% |
| Grade 1 | 90% | 100% |
| Grade 2 - 6 | 75% | 80% |
| Grade 7 - 8 | 60 - 75% | 80% |
|
Type B schools offer Religion in English beginning in Grade 1 and English Language Arts in Grade 2. Science and Health may be taught in English in Grades 7 and 8. The Saskatoon French School offers the Type A program where all instruction is in French except for English Language Arts.
In high school, Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics and Christian Ethics are offered in French. A French bilingual certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete 12 of 24 credits.
Registration
Parents may register their children in French Immersion starting in Kindergarten or Grade 1. Entry at other grade levels is determined on an individual basis. Kindergarten registration begins in January. French Immersion Kindergarten is offered approximately every other day in the six elementary French Immersion schools.
High school students may continue learning French by registering in one of four high schools.
Transportation
Bus transportation is available, at no cost, to elementary students who travel outside their home attendance area. High school students are responsible for their own transportation.
