Real Estate and RRSPs/RRIFs
Real Estate and Farmland
Real estate is often overlooked as a charitable gift, yet land or buildings, whether commercial or private, are excellent charitable gifts.
The Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation Inc. can and does accept gifts of real estate. Potential donors should contact the Foundation in the early stages of donating. Real estate gifts are frequently large and potentially very beneficial. They are carefully screened and accepted after investigating any possible problems. One such gift is currently used as an Environment Centre where students learn to be stewards of the earth. A charitable receipt can be issued when the Foundation has determined the current value of the donated property. For large gifts, two or more appraisals may be warranted.
Unless property is usable by the Foundation, it would be sold and the proceeds used for purposes designated by the donor. Ordinarily, the Foundation would not retain real estate for investment purposes, since it does not have the resources to manage the property.
If the gift is the donor's principal residence, any capital gain is not taxed. For other real estate, the donor may limit or eliminate the tax on the capital gain by electing a value for the property for any amount between its fair market value and cost base. A charitable receipt will be issued for the elected value.
RRSPs/RRIFs
Leaving RRSP or RRIF accumulations to the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation Inc. through a bequest can be a tax effective method of making a signifcant donation.
To donate RRSPs and RRIFs, the donor should provide in their Will for the same amount to be bequeathed to the Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation Inc. In this way, the tax payable on the RRSP/RRIF will be, at least partially, offset by the benefits of the charitable receipt from the Foundation. This donation will also reduce the estate's tax payable, thereby allowing the donor to make a bequest to the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation while not decreasing the amount available for other beneficiaries.
