Learners integrate new ideas and prior knowledge to construct their own meaning. In the beginning, the learners' understanding may be at the surface level; however, with experience and support they will grow and develop skills which will provide them with deeper understanding. Technology supplies students with a vast information base and tools which they can use to construct their own meanings.
Example
Students could created a website for SCCS. Students could contribute artwork and text for the site, they also would make many decisions regarding sharing of responsibilities, what to include in the site, and what to link to what. One part of the site could be a clickable maps of the virtual school. Clicking on aspects of each picture could result in more information about the school. In order to develop this maps, the students would have to build meaning into their ideas of what different parts of the virtual schools represent to them. For example, the picture of a principal's office could include a filing cabinet. If you click on the drawers of the cabinet, you can find out facts about the school, who the teachers are at the school, and who the students are at the school. A virtual construction of a school that does not exist would be the result.
