GENERAL
GOALS
Through
education students will gain knowledge of the treaty making process. This
awareness will encourage respect and harmony between all treaty peoples.
Students will gain an understanding of terms and their meanings
as they pertain to the treaty making process.
OVERVIEW
OF KINDERGARTEN TO GRADE SIX OBJECTIVES AND KEY TERMS
Kindergarten
Objective - to explore the basic concept of a promise made between people
Key Terms - promise, friendship, peace, respect, Elders
Grade
One
Objective - to understand that sometimes people make promises and give
up certain things to meet some of their basic needs and wants
Key Terms - sharing, agreement, Creator, respect, Elders
Grade
Two
Objectives - to understand that disagreements/conflicts can be resolved
peacefully
- to appreciate that all people have rights and responsibilities
Key Terms - conflict, negotiate, rights, responsibilities, respect, Elders
Grade
Three
Objectives - to become aware that the making of reserves was part of the
treaty process
- to learn about life on reserves today
Key Terms - treaty (as one way countries have of solving disagreements
peacefully) reserves, Queen, respect, Elders, negotiate
Grade Four
Objectives - to know that maps of the province provide a variety of information,
including the specific location of Métis communities e.g. (Lebret,
Batoche, Ile-a-la Crosse) and treaty areas
- to explore historical and contemporary life on reserves
- to learn about the role of Métis as translators in the treaty
making process

Five
Objectives - to learn how treaties are perceived by both Aboriginal and
non-Aboriginal people
- to understand the influence and power of the Indian Agent
- to learn how other cultures perceive treaties among the Aboriginal people

Six
Objectives - to understand that treaties are promises made with the Creator
by at least two groups
- to learn about the contents of Treaty Six, negotiated and signed on
their
behalf by ancestors of both the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community,
a treaty that affects our lives today
- to learn that treaties were agreements made between First Nations people
and the Queen's representatives
