  TREATY EDUCATION - GRADE ONE

Objectives - to understand that sometimes people make promises and give up certain things to meet some of their basic needs and wants.

Suggested Activities:
• Review concept of a promise as presented in Treaty Education Kit for
Kindergarten.
• Show the video on the Creation Legend (see protocol on telling legends).
• Discussion on how First Nations people had much to offer Europeans new to this land.
• Discussion on how treaties are a peaceful method of coming into an
agreement.
• Colour picture of the Treaty Medal along with a discussion about symbolism.
• Colour picture from Office of Treaty Commissioner (colouring contest)
• Round dance (see handout on steps for round dance included in the kit)
• Teach the traditional handshake using a circle format.
• Introduce talking circle sharing stories of oneself (talking stick included in kit)
