WHAT ARE NUTRIENTS AND HOW ARE THEY CLASSIFIED? FOOD IS OFEN PLACED IN CATEGORIES AS SHOWN IN CANADA'S FOOD GUIDE. HERE FOOD IS PLACED IN ONE OF FOUR GROUPS:
FOODS THAT WE EAT HAVE TWO TYPES OF COMPONENTS:
EATING A BALANCED DIET WILL PROVIDE YOUR BODY WITH THE NUTRITION IT NEEDS. WITHIN ANY FOOD, THERE MAY BE SEVERAL NUTRIENTS. THE FOOD COMPONENTS OR NUTRIENTS ARE CLASSIFIED IN GROUPS AS WELL. THE MAIN NUTRIENT GROUPS ARE:
IN THIS LESSON YOU WILL LEARN WHY OUR BODIES REQUIRE EACH NUTRIENT. YOU WILL THEN CLASSIFY FOODS INTO ONE OF THE MAIN NUTRIENT GROUPS. YOUR ACTIVITY INVOLVES DOING THREE THINGS: LEARNING YOUR FIRST TASK IS TO LEARN ABOUT THE MAIN NUTRIENT GROUPS. THE STUDENTS IN YOUR CLASS WILL BE GROUPED TO DO A JIGSAW. THERE WILL BE SIX GROUPS OF STUDENTS, WITH EACH GROUP ASSIGNED ONE MAIN NUTRIENT. YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT THIS ONE NUTRIENT IN DEPTH: WHAT IS THE NUTRIENT, WHAT IS THE NUTRIENT'S ROLE IN OUR BODY, WHAT HAPPENS IF OUR BODY LACKS THIS NUTRIENT OR GETS TOO MUCH OF IT, AND WHAT FOODS PROVIDE THIS NUTRIENT. TO DO YOUR LEARNING, YOU CAN USE YOUR CHEMICALS IN ACTION TEXTBOOK, OR USE OTHER BOOKS YOU MAY FIND IN YOUR LIBRARY OR YOU CAN USE INFORMATION YOU FIND ON THE INTERNET. INCLUDE IN YOUR POSTER: WHAT IS THE NUTRIENT, WHAT IS THE NUTRIENT'S ROLE IN THE BODY, WHAT HAPPENS IF OUR BODY LACKS THIS NUTRIENT, WHAT HAPPENS IF THE BODY HAS TOO MUCH OF THE NUTRIENT, AND WHAT FOODS PROVIDE THIS NUTRIENT. PUT YOUR FULL NAME IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THIS POSTER. SHARING OR TEACHING OTHERS YOU WILL SHARE YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR NUTRIENT WITH 5 OTHER CLASSMATES WHO HAVE DONE DIFFERENT NUTRIENTS THAN YOU.
