WHAT DISEASES RESULT FROM NUTRIENT IMBALANCES?

THE KEY NUTRIENT GROUPS IN A BALANCED DIET ARE: CARBOHYDRATE, FAT, PROTEIN, VITAMINS, MINERALS AND WATER.

IF OUR DIETS ARE NOT WELL BALANCED, THEN WE MAY SEE SOME EFFECTS OF THAT IMBALANCED DIET IN THE FORM OF POOR HEALTH AND DISEASE.

FOR EXAMPLE:

  • IF A PERSON CONSUMES TOO MUCH FAT IN THEIR DIET THEY WILL BE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO DEVELOPING HIGH CHOLESTEROL AND HEART DISEASE. IF A PERSON CONSUMES TOO MUCH PROTEIN, THE EXCESS PROTEIN WILL BE STORED IN THEIR BODY AS FAT. TOO MUCH FAT WILL ALSO LEAD TO HEART DISEASE AND POSSIBLY DIABETES.
  • VITAMINS AND MINERALS PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE REGULAR DIET. SAILORS WHO REMAINED ON LONG VOYAGES WITHOUT SEEING PORTS WOULD DEVELOP A VITAMIN C DEFICIENCY KNOWN AS SCURVY. FRESH FRUIT WAS NOT AVAILABLE TO THESE SAILORS AS THEY DID NOT SEE PORT FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. THIS RESULTED IN THEM NOT GETTING THE VITAMIN C NEEDED TO MAINTAIN HEALTH. SYMPTOMS OF SCURVY INCLUDE: JOINT PAIN, FATIGUE, BLEEDING GUMS AND LOOSE TEETH.
  • WATER IS NECESSARY FOR THE SURVIVAL OF ALL LIVING THINGS. EACH CELL IN OUR BODIES CONTAINS WATER. THE CHEMICAL PROCESSES OCCURING IN OUR BODIES DO SO IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER. TOO LITTLE WATER CAN LEAVE ONE DEHYDRATED. TOO MUCH WATER CAN DEPLETE OUR BODIES OF WATER SOLUBLE VITAMINS AND PRODUCE A LOW TEMPERATURE IN OUR BODIES SO THAT WE FEEL CHILLED.

BE SURE THAT YOU RECORD YOUR REFERENCES. THESE REFERENCES CAN BE BOOKS ON HEALTH AND DIET FROM YOUR LIBRARY OR INTERNET SITES.

COMPILE A LIST OF THE SYMPTOMS OF NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY AND NUTRIENT EXCESSES. USE THE TABLE IN THE ASSIGNMENT SECTION BELOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR WORK. TRY TO GATHER INFORMATION ON AT LEAST THREE COMMON VITAMINS AND MINERALS.
