BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

THERE ARE GENERALLY TWO KINDS OF COMPOUNDS: IONIC COMPOUNDS AND COVALENT COMPOUNDS.

IONIC COMPOUNDS ARE USUALLY MADE OF A METALLIC ELEMENT(S) AND A NONMETALLIC ELEMENT(S).

COVALENT COMPOUNDS ARE MADE ONLY OF NONMETALLIC ELEMENTS.

THE METALLIC ELEMENTS ARE LOCATED ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE PERIODIC TABLE WHEREAS THE NONMETALLIC ELEMENTS ARE ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE PERIODIC TABLE.

THE RULES FOR NAMING IONIC COMPOUNDS ARE DIFFERENT THAN THE RULES USED TO NAME COVALENT COMPOUNDS.
