WHAT IS A FOOD ADDITIVE AND HOW IS IT RECOGNIZED?

THE TERM FOOD ADDITIVE HAS BEEN DEFINED IN A VARIETY OF WAYS. IN THE MOST GENERAL SENSE, A FOOD ADDITIVE MEANS ANYTHING THAT IS ADDED TO A FOOD.

WHEN YOU LOOK AT AN INGREDIENTS LABEL ON A FOOD PACKAGE, SOME OF THE INGREDIENTS WILL LIKELY BE FOOD ADDITIVES. FOOD ADDITIVES WILL BE THOSE SUBSTANCES THAT ARE NOT A FOOD THEMSELVES OR SOLD SEPARATELY AS FOODS. SALT, PEPPER AND SUGAR ARE CONSIDERED TO BE INGREDIENTS, NOT FOOD ADDITIVES. POTASSIUM NITRITE THOUGH IS A TYPE OF SALT THAT IS ADDED TO SOME FOODS ALONG WITH COMMON SALT (MOST OFTEN CURED RED MEATS OR POULTRY PRODUCTS} TO HELP PRESERVE THE MEAT. POTASSIUM NITRITE WOULD BE A FOOD ADDITIVE BECAUSE IT HAS CHANGED THE FOOD IN THAT THE FOOD TAKES LONGER TO SPOIL.

THE TERM FOOD ADDITIVE HAS BEEN DEFINED DIFFERENTLY IN THE VARIOUS RESOURCES YOU MAY READ. IN ALL CASES THOUGH, A FOOD ADDITIVE IS SOMETHING ADDED TO THE FOOD OR A PROCESS THAT THE FOOD UNDERGOES.
