BENEDICT'S SUGAR TEST

SIMPLE SUGAR
  • ADD 3 TO 5 DROPS OF BENEDICT'S SOLUTION TO A TEST TUBE CONTAINING THE MIXTURE BEING TESTED.
  • SHAKE THE TEST TUBE GENTLY.
  • PLACE THE TEST TUBE IN A HOT WATER BATH FOR UP TO 10 MINUTES.
  • NOTE THE COLOR OF THE SOLUTION.
THE SOLUTION WILL TURN YELLOW, ORANGE OR RED IF THE SOLUTION CONTAINS A SIMPLE SUGAR.

IODINE STARCH TEST (LUGOL SOLUTION)

  • ADD 3 TO 5 DROPS OF IODINE SOLUTION (LUGOL SOLUTION) TO THE SUBSTANCE BEING TESTED FOR STARCH.
  • NOTE THE COLOR OF THE SUBSTANCE
THE SAMPLE WILL SHOW A DARK GREEN, PURPLE OR BLACK COLOR IF THE SUBSTANCE CONTAINS STARCH.

BIURET PROTEIN TEST

PROTEIN
  • THE SUBSTANCE TO BE TESTED SHOULD BE IN SOLUTION FORM.
  • TO A TEST TUBE ONE THIRD FILLED WITH THE SOLUTION, ADD 10 DROPS OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE SOLUTION (OR POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE SOLUTION).
  • SHAKE THE TEST TUBE THOROUGHLY.
  • ADD ABOUT 5 TO 9 DROPS OF COPPER SULFATE SOLUTION, ONE DROP AT A TIME, SHAKING THE TEST TUBE BETWEEN DROPS.
  • QUIT ADDING THE COPPER SULFATE SOLUTION AFTER A COLOR CHANGE IS SEEN.
  • NOTE THE FINAL COLOR.
THE SOLUTION TURNS A PURPLE COLOR IF LONG CHAIN PROTEINS ARE PRESENT; IF SHORT CHAIN PROTEINS ARE PRESENT THE SOLUTION WILL TURN PINK. A CLOUDY BLUE COLOR INDICATES THAT NO PROTEIN IS PRESENT.

LIPID TEST

READ ABOUT THE LIPID TEST AT:

LIPID OR FAT
  • PUT A SMALL AMOUNT OF A SUBSTANCE ON NEWSPRINT PAPER
  • NOTE THE TRANSLUCENCE OF THE SUBSTANCE
SUBSTANCES THAT CONTAIN THE MOST FAT WILL SHOW THE MOST TRANSLUCENCE
