WHAT ARE NUTRIENTS AND HOW ARE THEY CLASSIFIED?

FOOD IS OFEN PLACED IN CATEGORIES AS SHOWN IN CANADA'S FOOD GUIDE. HERE FOOD IS PLACED IN ONE OF FOUR GROUPS:

  • GRAINS AND PRODUCE
  • VEGETABLES AND FRUITS
  • DAIRY PRODUCTS
  • MEAT AND ALTERNATIVES

FOODS THAT WE EAT HAVE TWO TYPES OF COMPONENTS:

  1. NUTRITIOUS PARTS: THIS PART OF THE FOOD CONSISTS OF MOLECULES THAT THE BODY USES FOR ENERGY, GROWTH, MAINTENANCE OF CELLS AND CELL REPAIR. THE NUTRITIOUS PARTS OF FOOD ARE CALLED NUTRIENTS.
  2. NONNUTRITIOUS PARTS: THIS PART OF THE FOOD CONSISTS OF MOLECULES THAT THE BODY IS NOT CAPABLE OF DIGESTING AND THUS THIS PART OF THE FOOD IS EXCRETED AS WASTE.

EATING A BALANCED DIET WILL PROVIDE YOUR BODY WITH THE NUTRITION IT NEEDS. WITHIN ANY FOOD, THERE MAY BE SEVERAL NUTRIENTS. THE FOOD COMPONENTS OR NUTRIENTS ARE CLASSIFIED IN GROUPS AS WELL. THE MAIN NUTRIENT GROUPS ARE:

  • PROTEIN
  • CARBOHYDRATES
  • FAT
  • VITAMINS
  • MINERALS
  • WATER

IN THIS LESSON YOU WILL LEARN WHY OUR BODIES REQUIRE EACH NUTRIENT. YOU WILL THEN CLASSIFY FOODS INTO ONE OF THE MAIN NUTRIENT GROUPS.

ACTIVITY

YOUR ACTIVITY INVOLVES DOING THREE THINGS:

YOUR FIRST TASK IS TO LEARN ABOUT THE MAIN NUTRIENT GROUPS. THE STUDENTS IN YOUR CLASS WILL BE GROUPED TO DO A JIGSAW. THERE WILL BE SIX GROUPS OF STUDENTS, WITH EACH GROUP ASSIGNED ONE MAIN NUTRIENT.
