PROCEDURE
(PART THREE):
- THE
CHARACTERS OF THE STORY ARE REVISITED. USING THE DESCRIPTIONS
OF "DIAMETER", "RADIUS" AND "CIRCUMFERENCE"
FROM THE STORY, STUDENTS USE ANY METHOD THEY WISH TO ESTIMATE
ALL THREE FOR EACH OF EXAMPLES THEY BROUGHT FROM HOME.
- EACH
PAIR OF STUDENTS IS GIVEN A SET OF GAME CARDS TO USE AS LABELS.
THEY CHOOSE TWO OF THE LABELS AND USE THEM TO SORT THE TEN EXAMPLES
THEY HAVE BETWEEN THEM. THIS PRACTICE IS REPEATED SEVERAL TIMES
TAKING TWO NEW LABELS EACH TIME.
- STUDENTS
MAY SORT USING A VENN DIAGRAM; TWO INTERSECTING HOOLA HOOPS
PER PAIR WILL WORK WELL.
- STUDENTS
PLAY "THE YES/NO GAME".
- THEY
USE THE GAME CARDS AND THEIR TEN EXAMPLES.
- ONE
STUDENT SECRETLY CHOOSES AND READS ONE OF THE GAME CARDS.
THE LABEL REPRESENTS "YES" EXAMPLES.
- THIS
FIRST STUDENT THEN CHOOSES THOSE CIRCUMFERENCE EXAMPLES FROM
HOME THAT MATCH IN THE YES GROUP. THOSE EXAMPLES THAT DO NOT
MATCH THE CARD ARE REMOVED FROM THE GROUP.
- THE
SECOND STUDENT IS TO ANSWER "WHAT IS THE YES?" BY
GUESS THE DESCRIPTOR ON THE REVERSED LABEL BASED ON THE EXAMPLES
CHOSEN BY THE FIRST STUDENT.
- ROLES
ARE REVERSED AND A NEW LABEL IS CHOSEN FOR EACH NEW ROUND.

CLOSING:
- STUDENTS
USE A VARIETY OF MEASURING TOOLS TO FIND THE CIRCUMFERENCE, DIAMETER
AND RADIUS OF THEIR OBJECTS FROM HOME (STRING, RULERS, MEASURING
TAPES, ETC.).
- A
CHART MAY BE USED TO RECORD THEIR FINDINGS. "WHAT PATTERN
DO YOU SEE BETWEEN THE DIAMETER AND RADIUS? WHAT RELATIONSHIP
EXISTS BETWEEN THE DIAMETER AND THE CIRCUMFERENCE? THE RADIUS
AND CIRCUMFERENCE?"
- STUDENTS
DRAW THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE THREE MEASUREMENT TERMS: CIRCUMFERENCE,
DIAMETER AND RADIUS.
