PROCEDURE
(PART
ONE):
- THE
TEACHER TELLS THE STUDENTS THAT THEY WILL SEE SOME PICTURES AND
THAT THE PICTURES ARE BEING USED TO SHOW A CERTAIN MATH TOPIC.
- THE
TEACHER USES THE CONCEPT
ATTAINMENT INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY TO DEVELOP THE ATTRIBUTES
OF CIRCUMFERENCE.
- THE
TEACHER PLACES THREE "YES" PICTURES FROM THE "SAMPLE
PHOTOS" LINK ON A T CHART LABELED "YES" AND "NO".
- THE
STUDENTS ARE TOLD TO THINK ABOUT HOW THE YES EXAMPLES ARE THE
SAME AND HOW THE NO EXAMPLES ARE DIFFERENT FROM THE YES EXAMPLES.
- STUDENTS
ARE SHOWN ADDITIONAL PICTURES AND ARE ASKED TO USE "THUMBS
UP" IF THEY BELIEVE THE EXAMPLES IS A "YES",
"THUMBS DOWN" IF THEY THINK IT IS A "NO"
AND "THUMBS SIDEWAYS" IF THEY ARE UNSURE.
- THE
TEACHER ELICITS IDEAS FROM THE STUDENTS BY ASKING, "WHAT
DO THE YES EXAMPLES HAVE IN COMMON? HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT FROM
THE NO EXAMPLES?"
- THE
PROCEDURE CONTINUES UNTIL THE STUDENTS HAVE DETERMINED THAT
THE YES EXAMPLES HAVE CIRCULAR OR CURVED EDGES, NO POINTS, ARE
FLAT AND ARE MADE OF NEVER ENDING LINES.
- THE
STUDENT'S SUGGESTIONS ARE CHARTED ON POSTER PAPER FOR FUTURE
REFERENCE.
- THE
TEACHER EXPLAINS THAT TO MEASURE THE DISTANCE AROUND THE OUTER
EDGE OF ITEMS WITH THESE ATTRIBUTES IS CALLED FINDING THE CIRCUMFERENCE.

SET OF "SAMPLE PHOTOS" OR ITEMS AS EXAMPLES AND NON-EXAMPLES
OF CIRCUMFERENCE
- A
CYLINDER AND A CONE THAT MAY BE SLICED INTO A CROSS SECTION TO
SHOW A PLANAR SURFACE
- A
SET OF YES/NO GAME CARDS FOR EACH PAIR OF STUDENTS
