Methods of dealing with large numbers

Justification for the CIF.

As the numbers in our courses get larger we have to start to put together techniques to make your life as an instructor easier. The 150 day calendar puts extra stress on our ability to follow students. This is going to be a suggestion to help with the tracking of students.

Feel free to edit the questions to better fit your needs but I think the idea will save you a lot of tracking and chasing.

The concept is a follows, we have been doing all the work of trying to make the student keep as close as possible to the student calendar and the suggested dates. We know the biggest reason students are not successful is procrastination and not knowing where they should be in the course. The weekly email system within cybertracker is a concern and is not stable...so we have another idea.

Create a single page before every major assignment

On this page explain how this is the method of releasing the assignment/quiz. It is a four question test which when complete will give a selective release of the assignment. The information collected from the quiz will help in your tracking of students. It will also force the students to use the student calendar and in writing state whether they are behind or ahead of schedule.
Here are the Step By Step Instructions.

Step one Build the html page.
Include the following reminder...
Complete the quiz in the toolbar above to release the assignment/quiz.
Code

Tips and Hints announcements

(don't forget to change the course code)
<table border="1"> <tr> <td width="150" bgcolor="93D151"> <img src="http://cyberschool.scs.sk.ca:8900/NIP1CYBP/hints.gif"> </td><td bgcolor="93D151"> Content </center></td></tr> </table>

Step four
Build a quiz.
a) Put four questions into the question bank.
b) Build a quiz.

Step three Selective release the quiz/assignment right after this page.
To select the students that will see the link, click Select. Alternatively, you can select students using the release criteria in the Release based on drop down lists. If you select students using both the Select button and the Release based on drop down lists, all criteria must be satisfied before the link is released. To specify when the link will be available, use the Release after and Release until drop-down lists.

Selective release.

This is not a manditory CIF but do not complain to me about your class size and marking if you have not tried this first...I think it will help...:)
