PRINCIPAL'S PEN It is hard to believe we are already halfway through September! We have already had a school assembly, we have begun our first fundraiser, students have signed up for sports and leadership teams, our Care Partners have all done activities together and we are well into our academic programs. Our students have been working hard and showing that excellent St. George attitude! Keep up the great work! Big thanks go out to the St. George Catholic School Community Council for their Welcome Back BBQ. It was a wonderful chance for everyone to say “hello again” and is an excellent community builder. Special thanks to everyone who showed up early and stayed later to set up and clean up as well as to those who cooked and served. A reminder to students regarding staying at the school at lunch; the expectation is that students are to remain on school property throughout the entire lunch period and to follow the noon lunch rules as outlined in the Student Planner and Parent Handbook. In the event that a student has permission to leave the school over the noon hour a hand written/signed note must be provided to the classroom teacher or school administration. Students: Please don't forget to wear indoor footwear throughout the day. In the case of an emergency evacuation there is little time to put on shoes. We will be practicing emergency drills to ensure a safe, quick exit. Are you looking for an easy way to get involved in the school and your child's classroom? Consider being a room parent. A room parent is a liaison between the School Community Council/school administration and each classroom. If you are interested please contact your child's teacher. We are all looking forward to seeing everyone on Meet the Teacher/Staff night at 7 p.m. on September 24, 2008.
Quote of the Day : “What I do today is important because I'm exchanging a day of my life for it.” Albert M. Wells, JR.
SCHOOL FEES School fees are now due. Please make the cheque payable to St. George School . Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Receipts will be issued at the office.
“TWELVE BASKETS FULL” The miracle of Jesus and his disciples feeding five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish is a reminder that with faith in God all is possible. To celebrate our faith the Grade 4/5 class is holding a food collection. They are asking that students and staff of St. George contribute to this religion project by donating non-perishable food items that they will deliver to the Saskatoon Food Bank. Food will be collected until this Friday, Sept. 19 and can be dropped off at the front foyer of the school. Do you remember when Jesus said “where two or three are gathered in my name there am I in their midst”? As we gather this food Jesus will truly be with us, again, feeding many in need.
Our Board has purchased insurance for all students for ‘school hours' or while students are on a school sponsored activity. There are two parts to this coverage. The first is coverage for costs of treatment (ambulance, dental, fiberglass casts etc.) and the second is a ‘fracture indemnity' intended to pay for miscellaneous expenses related to the accident. It is the parent's responsibility to file the claim. Claim forms can be obtained from the school or the website www.iapkidsplus.com/applynow or the broker – Marsh Canada Limited 683-6966. Parents have the option of purchasing additional extended coverage, which would cover students for 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you are interested you must complete the form which was sent home with your student and mail it with payment to the insurance company. Coverage can also be purchased on line through the website.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP NEWS Our Grade 8 students are already showing their strong leadership abilities early this year. Many have gone through an application/interview process to show that they are up to the challenge of student leadership. Based on the excellent interviews, we are looking forward to a great year! The leadership team will consist of 14 students who will be in charge of many school activities/committees. Our leadership team includes: Sabrina, Jerrod , Larissa, Kennedy, Jayden, Kristina, Natasha, Michelle, Trevor, Ursula, Blaire, Sydney, Josee, Julia and Louisa.
SPORTS NEWS Our cross-country team is up and “running.” Ms. Piggot, Ms. Rempel and Mr. Gauthier have been practicing with the team and are gearing up for the two meets on Sept. 24 and Oct. 1 both at Diefenbaker Park . We encourage parents/guardians/relatives to come out on those days and cheer the team on! Mrs. Schmitt, Ms. Nivon and Ms. Rempel have been working out with the running and walking club each week. This is an excellent opportunity for our students to engage in regular physical activity. Volleyball season will be starting up soon.
